Leavers Interview | Josh, Class of 2022
The 2021-22 academic year is fast coming to a close. Soon, another class of Wellingtonians will go out into the world to accomplish great things. Until then, some of our 2022 Leavers are reflecting on their time at Wellington and what lies on the road ahead after graduation.
Today, we talk with year 13 pupil Josh. Josh became a Wellingtonian when he enrolled four years ago as a year 10 pupil. During his time at Wellington, he discovered a love for science and volleyball. He learned the value of going above and beyond the call of duty and the importance of cutting loose and having a bit of fun now and then too. Josh intends to pursue a career in medicine after graduation. Here, he sums up his Wellington experience.
“I started here a year 10 pupil. That was four years ago. I remember thinking to myself that I could finally be good at math (stereotypical of someone who went to a local Chinese school), but it could not be further from the truth. On a serious note, though, everyone was very cordial, hardworking and goal-oriented. From the first day, I knew I was going to meet many like-minded and inspiring people and make some lifelong friends.”
“If it were not for Wellington, I would never have had so many opportunities to work in the lab. Wellington also exposed me to a variety of sports, with a different sport in each term. I fell in love with volleyball. Playing it, I made some of my closest friends. It was a great way to get the endorphins pumping.”
“The thing I like most about being a Wellingtonian is the global network of friends that I have been able to build, which I think will only continue to grow. I have learned so much about different cultures. Not only that, I have a place to stay in so many different countries whenever I travel.”
“My favourite Wellington memory would have to be Friday volleyball sessions with Mr Warner. My friends and I took pride in regularly trouncing our competition. I also had a lot of fun hosting spikeball tournaments in the Sixth Form Centre, much to the annoyance of Mr O’Brien and the lady in the admissions office downstairs.”
“Wellington has some of the most supportive teachers. Not only did they help me achieve certain targets in a subject, but they also cultivated in me a love for the sciences. My teachers always encouraged me to go above and beyond what the syllabus required. As a result, learning always felt like fun — challenging yet enjoyable.”
“I want to study medicine. I think it is a perfect blend of the sciences and the humanities. It is also very intellectual. A doctor constantly deals with scientific enigmas and ethical dilemmas, which really excites me. ”
A Wellington Welcome
Wellington is taking rolling applications for the 2021-22 academic year and inviting future Wellingtonians to join us for virtual campus tours for 2022 entry.
Children and young adults applying for our Senior School (years 9 through 13) and Academic Scholarship programmes are encouraged.
