Wellington College Arts Festival 2016

Wellington College Arts Festival 2016

19-25 March 2016

Wellington College International Shanghai hosted its 2016 Arts Festival, which celebrated William Shakespeare, poet, playwright and actor, commemorating the 400th Anniversary of his death in 1616.

During the Festival week, pupils, parents, staff and guests were involved in a range of activities across the arts such as theatre workshops, storytelling, documentary film, clowning, journalism, and many more. It was an exciting schedule that embraced the whole school and supplemented Wellingtonians’ education with an innovative and enjoyable immersion in the arts.

The festival is designed to take children out of their timetabled comfort zones and expose them to arange of activities and disciplines they might not usually encounter.  In addition to helping them prepare for a world that is fast-changing and unpredictable, the festival encourages pupils to open their eyes, take risks in unfamiliar situations, and make discoveries about their own capabilities.

The activities in 2016 included:

  • Film workshops - Kim Flitcroft
  • Clowning workshops (with an eye on Shakespeare’s clowns) - Roxanne Browne
  • Writing workshops - Ian Marchant
  • Journalism workshops - Gill Sutherland
  • Prep School Storytelling workshops - Eden Ballantyne
  • Pre-Prep Storytelling workshops - Alex Milway
  • Drama workshops - Round Midnight
  • Screening of the best film adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays - Roger Lewis

Wellington College Arts Festival 2015

Wellington College Arts Festival 2015

4-17 March 2015

Wellington College International Shanghai hosted the Arts Festival 2016 celebrating William Shakespeare, poet, playwright and actor, as we commemorate the 400th Anniversary of his death in 1616.

The first edition of the annual Wellington College Arts Festival followed the theme of ‘comedy’ and presented a collection of workshops, talks, performances and productions filling the school with energy and excitement.

Taking children off timetable for a short time, immersing them in a different educational experience, and introducing then to new arts is an important part of their schooling. The figure of Shakespeare is threaded through much of this, and he is the presiding influence of the festival.

The activities 2015 included:

  • Poetry workshops - Bill Herbert
  • Manga workshops - Sonia Leong
  • Storytelling workshops - Alex Milway
  • Pre-Prep singing workshops– Gretchen Hewitt
  • Stand-up comedy workshops – Logan Murray
  • TV comedy workshops - Jim Poyser
  • Graffiti workshops - Scott Walker
  • Drama workshops - Round Midnight
  • Film workshops & Screening - Roger Lewis
