Wellington College Shanghai flushed with sporting success
2017-02-26
The past few weeks have seen Wellingtonians achieve an impressive string of sporting successes. .
On the netball courts, the school’s girls’ team faced down stiff competition and won all three of their games last week. With such a great start to the tournament, the girls are confident and ready to face the next set of challengers. The U14/U13 Girls CISSA season also started in excellent fashion with three victories in the first round.
The Senior SISAC football season began with an equally emphatic string of victories for Wellington College; the Division 1 boys and girls teams as well as the Division 2 boys team all won their opening matches. The U9 & U11 Rugby teams also enjoyed an excellent start to their season, tallying five wins, two draws and three losses from their opening fixtures.
Looking towards the track, our pupils experienced a hugely enjoyable and memorable Valentine’s Day, as they were given the opportunity to represent their houses in the annual Inter-House Cross-Country running competition. Everyone gave their absolute best effort and conquered the five kilometre run while showing plenty of drive, endurance and house spirit.
Our pupils also achieved outstanding sporting results while overseas during the Spring Festival. In the pool, Wellington College’s swim squad won 58 FOBISIA medals in the Kingdom of Brunei while the ski team enjoyed great views high up on the slopes in South Korea as they got to grips with challenging snow conditions. The rugby team also travelled to the UK, competing with a number of English schools and they even had their first taste of competitive hockey.
Our talented and dedicated coaching teams always strive to create opportunities for our pupils of all age groups to represent Wellington College’s sports teams and seek excellence in their chosen field.
We also encourage pupils to consider the possibility of wider participation across a breadth of different sports. Naturally, many pupils want to focus intently on preparing for the competitive elements of their primary sport but we believe that it is beneficial for them to try out other disciplines as part of our house sports system.
This multi-sport participation process is believed to be beneficial in terms of encouraging leadership and teamwork. Being able to work with multiple personalities to achieve a common goal and inspire team mates is an important ability, one that will serve pupils well when they progress to the university or prepare to enter the job market.
