Meet our Head of Art

2017-03-08

Art education holds an important place at Wellington College International Shanghai, as it reflects our ongoing commitment to fostering creativity and imagination in our pupils by creating a supportive environment that allows them to freely express themselves and their world view. Through our well-conceived art curriculum, pupils are given the opportunity to develop their creative thinking and problem solving abilities, while at the same time honing their practical art skills. The art department spares no effort in providing pupils with all kinds of opportunities to artistically express themselves in the studios. A wide range of media is on offer: from painting and drawing to printmaking, ceramics, sculpture and even special effects makeup. A newly designed textile room opened in January 2017 and we also have plans to expand the 3D media and photography facilities. Wellington College encourages pupils of any age to get involved in art on campus. Most recently, many of the younger pupils created rooster-themed artworks for the Chinese New Year charity auction. Their current projects include building a 3D periodic table for the science department, designing logos and creating artworks for the upcoming Welling10K Run and Summer Festival. Events of this nature allow pupils to see their concept designs gradually transform from an initial sketch on the page into a fully realised work of art. We are thrilled to see them enjoying the chance to proudly share their artistic vision with the rest of the school community. Abigail Beastall Head of Art
