Sports Day: Fun, games and sportsmanship

2017-06-09
Over the past few weeks, a sense of cheerful enthusiasm and anticipation could be felt across the campus, as pupils and teaching staff prepared for the different age groups’ Sports Day events. Despite soaring temperatures, everyone performed admirably, displaying tremendous team spirit and a consistent commitment to the important ideal of fair play. It was truly heartwarming to see them cheering not only for their fellow athletes, but also for their opponents. Sports Day started with a magnificent marching display from each house, accompanied by passionate cheering as the athletes prepared for the competition. This year, a new range of events were added to the lineup, such as tug of war and the sack relay race. These additions were designed to make Sports Day more accessible for pupils of all levels of athletic ability. Inclusion is a right at the heart of our philosophy of teaching sport at Wellington. Each pupil is encouraged to find the sport which they truly enjoy and also inspires them to excel, so that when they look back on their sporting achievements at Wellington it will be with pride and pleasure. Thanks to our outstanding facilities, all pupils have the opportunity to explore and experiment with a variety of sports, ranging from football, to rugby, hockey, cricket, netball, swimming and even scuba diving. Sports Day not only provides the perfect opportunity for all our pupils to showcase their athletic ability across a wide range of disciplines, it is also designed to help them develop a true sense of sportsmanship. While scoring points and winning trophies is a positive and rewarding part of the experience, what matters most are the invaluable lessons regarding fair play and sportsmanship, which allow pupils to forge new friendships and accept both victories and defeats with good grace. Huge congratulations go to everyone who participated in and contributed to these memorable sporting afternoons! Lower Prep Final House Standings 1. Hopetoun 2. Wellesley 3.
