Pupil leadership: Meet our Prep School Head Boy and Head Girl

2017-12-14
Just before the half-term holidays, the Prep School chose its Head Boy and Head Girl: Florian (8B) and Kayla (8C). Through its expanding programme of offering pupils positions of responsibility, Wellington believes in giving young people the chance to test their leadership skills, allowing them to experience the difficult and demanding challenge of being a leader. Flo and Kayla explain what inspired them to apply for their positions and what it means to have been chosen for them.
Flo: I must admit, I was totally shocked when I got the position. I’d applied to be Head of House and had given a speech to my house, so when I didn’t get it I was quite disappointed, but then they announced Head Boy. I couldn’t believe it when they called my name.
Kayla: Same here, I was surprised but happy! I’ve been at Wellington for three years now and ever since my first day here, I’ve always thought that it’s a place that lets you be who you want to be. It’s a school where everyone is kind and welcoming to one another, each person’s talents and good qualities are celebrated, and everybody generally just tries to be a good person. That’s what makes the school such a great place to be and that’s the kind of environment I want to support as Head Girl.
Flo: Exactly, we’re all really close and supportive of each other here. Just look at the house system. My old school had a British-based house system but we only came together as houses for Sports Day and that was about it. At Wellington, we have house activities and competitions all the time and we get to become friends with people in different year groups, not just our own.
Kayla: I honestly can’t name anyone from my last school who was in the year lower than me. I love the fact that I know and like so many people from different year groups.
Flo: It’s a real community here, and that’s important for helping everyone enjoy learning and finding out what they’re good at. I only arrived last Christmas, but I felt part of things right away. I remember the first musical, Bugsy Malone, and how everyone wanted to see it and support the people who put it together. That was an amazing atmosphere and it encouraged me to get into acting myself. This year I tried out for the musical – I got in and I absolutely love being part of it.
Kayla: It’s the same for me too; I only got involved in dancing because my teacher encouraged me to try out for the 'Have to Dance' competition, and now I’m a musical theatre scholar. I think it’s very important that we all get the chance to find out what talents we have and that there’s plenty of chances for us to celebrate what we’re good at together. The house competitions are a good example of that.Flo: There’s also a genuinely friendly atmosphere whenever we have the house competitions. We like to joke around and everyone says that their house is the best, but in the end it’s a friendly competitive spirit that’s not taken too far. Everyone celebrates and enjoys what everyone else can do. We all support each other and try to help one another to be the best kind of person they can be. As Head Boy, that’s the atmosphere I want to encourage as much as possible. I think a big part of that is setting the right example. Our key responsibility is to do what’s right even if it’s hard or if we have to sacrifice something. It’s hard to stand up to your friends if they’re doing something wrong or being mean to someone, but being a Head Boy or Head Girl means that you have to set a good example and demonstrate to them the importance of what we believe as a College. Kayla: That’s it, we both want to help everyone enjoy their time at school as much as possible and get the most out of it. I think that starts with each person feeling like it’s always okay to be themselves and to do the things they really love. To anyone who is thinking about applying for a position of responsibility, I would say just go for it. Wellington embraces the fact that you can do anything you feel you want to do, everyone who comes here has the chance to try and be anything that they want to be. Sincere congratulations must go to Flo and Kayla on their appointments. We look forward to seeing what they will achieve during their time as Head Boy and Head Girl.
