Science Week 2019 | Knowledge is power
2019-02-18
Scientia potentia est – Knowledge is power
This Latin aphorism has appeared in literature as far back as 1668, notably in classic literature works Leviathan, by Thomas Hobbes. This Science Week, we are celebrating the power of knowledge. However, we must also be critical of knowledge when we attribute value. In an ever-changing world of unbridled access to information, it is also vital to determine the value and reliability of all knowledge. In science, we celebrate ever-changing knowledge – the refinement of laws, theories, and models based on the scientific process and empirical evidence. The strength of science is the absence of absolute truth and the pursuit of the accumulation of evidence that adapts and improves the way we describe and explain the beauty of the natural world.
This Science Week, we have a vast array of activities on offer, by all subjects and throughout all year groups, too many to go through in a single article. Instead, here’s a bit of a preview as to what we can all look forward to.
In Pre-Prep, there will be an assortment of activities led by the pupils’ classroom teachers. Miss Luker is leading science fairs in years 3, 4 and 5. Upper Prep and Senior School will be signing up to a host of events during CCA time led by specialist teachers. Two science house events will run for both upper Prep and Senior School, so more house points are up for grabs. Additionally, IB pupils will be supporting these events throughout this week as our newly appointed ‘science ambassadors’. The sixth form will also be having their group 4 day, where they will work together as biologists, chemists, physicists and technologists to create a novel investigation.
This year, Science Week will go beyond the boundaries of knowledge in discrete subject areas. The accumulation of knowledge will be celebrated in all areas of the school. What knowledge the pupils will accumulate I cannot say, but come join us on a voyage of… the known.
Get ready for Science Week with a look at the exctement from last year.
