2019 Summer reading list

2019-06-24
The much anticipated annual summer reading list is out. The following reading recommendations are courtesy of our fantastic College librarian, Pippa Jacobi. It has something for every age group, including parents. Enjoy your summer break and be sure to pick up a book.

Pre-Prep

Cyril & Pat
Author: Emily Gravett
Friendship and awkwardness with charm
Elmer

Author: David McKee
Any of the Elmer books are good to read this summer because Elmer is 30 this year so you need to get to know him.

Lower Prep

Popcorn Eating Squirrels
Author: Matt Dickinson
Matt is coming to visit Wellington in September so it would be good to know why the squirrels in his books eat popcorn.
Hotel Flamingo
Author: Alex Milway (YES – our friend and the creator of Pigsticks and Harold)
Alex’s new book - the first of three - is out now.

Stitch Head
Author: Guy Bass
Guy came to visit us for book day and thought Wellington pupils were wonderful. Stitch Head will be made into a film next year.

Upper Prep

Northern Lights
Author: Philip Pullman It is time well spent entering in to this world. Don’t be put off from reading the books because of the film.
Check Mates
Author: Stewart Foster
If you like a good mystery this is for you, with an amusing underdog and the world of competitive chess as a backdrop.
Return to Wonderland: Stories inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice
Author: Various popular authors  Fall back down the rabbit hole and find out what might have been going on down there.

Years 8-10

Northern Lights
Author: Philip Pullman
Again! It’s an absolute treat of a three-book read.

Little Fires Everywhere

Grown-Ups

Northern Lights

Neapolitan Quartet
Author: Elena Ferrante  My Brilliant Friend is the first book and begins this epic story of friendship that lasts decades.
