The stars of Chicago in their own words

2021-03-10

Tickets for our high school Shanghai production of Chicago are going fast! And for those of you still undecided about seeing this Tony Award-winning classic about murder, scandal and celebrity in the Jazz Age, we have caught up with the show's leading cast members to hear about the experience in their words. Here is what they have to say about their characters, their experiences working on this production and why Chicago is not to be missed.

Alice (year 12) as Roxie Hart
"This character is definitely different from the previous characters I have played. My previous characters have been more similar to my own personality.  So this is quite fun because it is out there, and it is wild and wacky and I get to try something completely new."

Owen (year 13) as Amos Hart
"Amos is a very fun character. He is really different from how I am usually, so playing him can be a really big challenge. You have to force yourself to become someone that you are not, and that involves different physical gestures and ways of talking. It is hard work."

Aspen (year 12) as Velma Kelly
"The key to playing Velma Kelly is that you cannot force everything. You have to go with the flow and say the lines as if you are saying them as yourself. You cannot force yourself to be the character, you have to play the character as yourself."

Flo (year 11) as Billy Flynn
"My character is not a very moral guy. He is selling himself as caring about his clients, but he only cares about the money. But it is fun to play a bad guy because you can get away with doing things you cannot in real life."

Finty (year 11) as Mary Sunshine
"Throughout this play, I have learned lots of things from watching the cast. I have gotten lots of acting tips. I have gotten better at dance, which was not one of my strong suits. Overall, I think it has helped develop my acting."

Chicago will be performed at the Wellington College International Shanghai Theatre from 18 March at 7 pm and run until 20 March with a bonus matinee performance on 20 March at 2 pm.
