A look inside our brand new Sixth Form Centre

2021-05-06

Martin O'Brien

Head of Sixth Form

Last month, we welcomed our year 12 pupils into our brand new Sixth Form Centre. The reactions of the pupils speak volumes — smiles and gasps of delight all around. The brand new space is purpose-built to support them as they study for the rigorous IB Diploma and provide a space where they can both work and socialise. With our small class sizes and bespoke learning environment, this space will help our pupils reap the best possible results from their hard work.

The sixth form is a relatively small cohort, but it has seen rapid growth in the past few years. The cohort was poised to outgrow our previous Sixth Form Centre, which is why our new centre occupies an entire floor of building 5. Suffice to say, the newly renovated space is nothing short of impressive. The décor is simple, understated and contemporary while still retaining a deep sense of Wellington tradition.

Our pupils' needs drove the overall design of the space. The casual observer may point out that it looks more like a co-working space than a school facility. This was not a mistake. We wanted to provide our pupils with an environment that fosters independence and maturity, setting them in the right frame of mind before they move on to university.

We also wanted them to have a place where they could be productive yet also feel at home within the College. The common area, therefore, features several individual workstations where they can plug in with their devices and engage fully in their studies. The new centre also features several conference and instruction rooms equipped with state-of-the-art flat-screen monitors. Our pupils will be able to use these spaces to collaborate on independent projects, conduct pupil-led learning sessions or attend talks with guest speakers or seminars on higher education and career guidance. But there is also ample space where pupils can unwind, socialise and forge lasting friendships with their classmates.

We are truly excited about this new addition to the College and the invaluable resource that it will provide for our most senior pupils. If you would like to visit the school for a tour of our new sixth form centre, please contact our admissions team. Tours are available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. To book, please call us at +(86-21) 5185-3885 or +(86-21) 5185-3864 or email us at admissions.shanghai@wellingtoncollege.cn.
